OIL POLLUTION IDENTIFICATION SERVICE

The complexity of identifying an oil pollutant to determine its source is briefly discussed. Problems encountered in identification include weathering, the wide range of oil compounds, and the contamination of oil samples by sand, sediment, and vegetation. An analytical profile of an oil pollutant is based on its gas chromatographic patterns, spectroscopic properties, and content of organic and inorganic constituents. Comparison of the analytical results with published data for crude and refined oils, taking into account changes due to weathering, can enable an experienced analyst to identify the original oil. The Analytical Chemical Section at the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards, Dublin, Ireland, offers such a service.
