IOWA MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES, 1987

This report contains statistics on motorcycle fatalities in Iowa for the year 1987. Highlights are as follows: In 1987, 57 motorcyclists were killed in 50 fatal accidents; 11 of the victims were cycle passengers. The toll is four more than were killed in 1986. 52 (91%) of the victims were not wearing helmets. Saturdays and Sundays were the most deadly for fatal accidents involving motorcycles; 37 (74%) occurred on weekends; 29 (58%) occurred between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Nearly 53% of the victims died in one-vehicle accidents. 30 cyclists were killed when they lost control of their cycles on curves. Speed-related fatal crashes killed 15. 38 (67%) of the motorcycle fatalities were alcohol-related. Of the 34 alcohol-related fatal crashes, the cycle operator had been drinking in all but one of them. Of the 23 fatal accidents that involved a motorcycle and at least one other vehicle, the cyclist was at fault 70% of the time. The average age of the cyclists killed was 27 years old.
