TRAVEL DEMANDS IN THE 1990S: A LOOK AT DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES THAT WILL AFFECT HIGHWAY TRANSPORTATION IN THIS DECADE
In 1987, the Highway Users Federation for Safety and Mobility along with other public interest associations undertook an examination of commuting trends called "Commuting in America." That study identified the trends that dominated commuting patterns and other urban travel patterns in the 1970s and into the 1980s. This document examines those patterns to see how they will affect commuting and the nation in the 1990s. It addresses three questions: Will these patterns persist or fade? Will new forces of change develop? Will new patterns emerge?
