TRANSIT 2000: TASK FORCE ON PUBLIC TRANSIT FOR THE 21ST CENTURY. BACKGROUND PAPER. ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT
The rapid acceptance of gasoline as an engine fuel has made the 20th century a period of rapid expansion for the transportation industru. This expansion has had two serious side effects: a dependence on foreign oil and urban air quality crisis. While these issues are nothing new, their impacts are going to increasingly affect the transportation industry. As a result, the future demand for mass transit will be greatly influenced by environmental regulations and fuel availability. Legislators view mass transit as a potential solution to poor air quality and foreign oil dependence. Mass transit industry should closely monitor all legislation dealing with air quality control and alternative fuels. The challenge to the industru is to provide mass transit service that is accessible, reliable, and environmentally sound.
