EIGHT-YEAR PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF AN ASPHALT-RUBBER HOT MIX PAVEMENT
In October 1980, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) placed an experimental 900-ft section of asphalt-rubber hot mix bituminous pavement on state route 79 in Madison, Connecticut. Finely ground rubber was supplied by the Arizona Refining Company and was blended with the asphalt (grade AC-20) in the ratio of 1/5 (20% rubber). The pavement was placed as a 1.5-in. thick overlay in one lift using conventional paving techniques. A standard ConnDOT class 2 bituminous pavement was placed at the same time and used as a control section. Engineers from ConnDOT's Division of Research monitored the surface condition, skid resistance and roughness during the period from October 1980 to August 1986, and again in June/July 1989. In September 1986, it was concluded and published in a six-year evaluation report that the asphalt-rubber pavement was performing better than the standard ConnDOT class 2 control mix. The conclusion was drawn primarily on the basis of the difference in the amount of longitudinal cracking that had developed during the six-year observation period. An eight-year evaluation made this past summer indicates that current conditions parallel those reported in 1986. On the basis of transverse, longitudinal and alligator cracking, the asphalt-rubber mix continues to perform better than the control section. Both the skid resistance and roughness values remain at acceptable levels and are similar for the control and experimental pavements.
