AASHTO 1914-1989: MOVING AMERICA INTO THE FUTURE

In 1989 the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) celebrated its 75th anniversary, having been founded in 1914. AASHTO is the organization of the departments of highways and transportation in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. As such, it reflects those organizations in its organization and activities. While comprised solely of governmental agencies, AASHTO does work with the private sector, sometimes through joint committees, and the Association's publications are available worldwide and for decades have conveyed the best practices in highway construction and other aspects of transportation. This publication is in part a history of the past 25 years (updating the 50th anniversary history) intended to inform about transportation developments in America between 1964 and 1989, and how AASHTO responded to those developments. It also provides insights into how the Association is organized and functions, and how it is working to meet the transportation needs of the future. It includes reports prepared by each of the Member Departments, describing what has occurred within those departments over the past 25 years.
