SHIFTING AN ALIGNMENT SAVES STATE $90 MILLION
This note describes how in an attempt to save up to $90 million in right-of-way costs, officials with the Tennessee Department of Transportation have proposed shifting the route of a major new commuter parkway planned between Memphis and its eastern suburbs. It is proposed that the northernmost 10 miles of the future Nonconnah Parkway between Collierville and the Interstate 240 ring road in Memphis should go through undeveloped land. The proposed route would require only 10 million in right-of-way costs, as opposed to more than $100 million in the original plan.
