SOWING THE CARAWAY SEED
The green car is imaginary, and the only way to move towards a green future in transport terms is to dispense with the car altogether and travel less. The experience in Europe seems to offer a variety of options that could be tested and adopted elsewhere. In this paper the author will briefly discuss the need to eliminate cars from our lives. This will be followed with a mention of an idealized urban structure. Next he will look at the policies and practice of Bologna, Hanover, Lyons and Vienna for the particular lessons learned from each. In conclusion there is an assessment of the usefulness of current policy and what remains to be done to achieve livable cities.
