SNOW AND ICE CONTROL--ACTIVE WARNING SYSTEMS NEEDED AT BRIDGES

Preferential freezing occurs when the surface of a bridge freezes before the surface of the main roadway thus creating very hazardous conditions for motorists. Static signs which warn motorists to watch for ice on bridges and may be posted year round can still be found in abundance and their effectiveness is being questioned. Active warning systems such as flashing lights, signs which alert motorists as to icy conditions on bridges and alert highway maintenance personnel of icy conditions when they exist, and those which recommend some definitive action for motorists to take in the event that such a condition exists are long overdue and need to be researched, developed and employed.
