OPERATIONS BRIEF. 999 EMERGENCY RESPONSE SERVICE

The paper describes a new energency response service for motorists with cellular phones. It allows them to obtain assistance for themselves or others while traveling in Chicago area expressways. The service augments the Emergency Traffic Patrol and expressway traffic travel time forecasting, which help keep traffic moving, improve safety, and provide timely traffic condition information. A review of calls handled for the period August 1989 through May 1990 is summarized. It shows the initial success of the service.
