GREAT RIVER BRIDGE
The completion is reported of the feasibility study of the proposed Great River Bridge between Arkansas and Mississippi. It concluded that either a highway/rail combination bridge or a highway-only bridge would yield a positive benefit/cost ratio. The study recommended that a highway-only structure be constructed at cost of about $130 million. Main spans should be constructed to allow the addition of rail service at a later time. The bridge would be a 2-lane, cable-stayed deck truss bridge. A Delta, or Greek triangle design has been incorporated into the plans to create a unique appearance. The next phase in the development of the bridge will be the geotechnical studies and the preparation of an environmental imapct statement.
