DESIGN/BUILD CONTRACTING SPEEDS BRIDGE COMPLETION
Knowing how the contractor was planning to go about building the Ochlockonee Bay Bridge, located partly over a shallow, environmentally sensitive tidal area, enabled the designer to incorporate specific features to help simplify the job. This $12 million, 5800-ft project is the first Florida design/build bridge. The construction contractor and design subcontractor worked closely together on the design and scheduling package. That the two firms could work together "before" the bid went in helped the team cut months from the schedule. The actual completion time is estimated to be 26 months from advertising for consultants to the end of construction. The Florida DOT would normally allow 42 months for the project with a conventional linear design-to-build process. This article discusses some of the design features of the bridge.
