MOVING 36 MILLION CUBIC YARDS OF DENVER DIRT
Moving 36 million cubic yards of earth in 18 months for Denver's new airport is a major job, and Ames Construction Inc. is tackling it with a major show of earthmoving force. Approximately 100,000 cu yd of earth a day are being excavated by 200 Ames employees working around the clock, seven days a week. They operate 17 Caterpillar 631 D and E scrapers, six Cat 776 tractors pulling pairs of 130-ton bottom-dump trailers, and a Holland 700 belt loader. Further details of the earthmoving operation are provided in this article.
