RETURN TO MT. ST. HELENS
Mount St. Helens was rocked by a volcanic explosion in May 1980. Among the damages it caused was the destruction of 37 miles of highway providing access into the wilderness area north of Mt. St. Helens. At present there is no access to that large wilderness area beyond a viewpoint at Mile 21 of SR 504, except for logging roads owned by the Weyerhaeuser Company. Washington State is now developing a new 29-mile, $145-million Spirit Lake Memorial Highway to restore public access to that area. This article describes the rock excavation for a section of the new road between Mile Posts 30 and 34.
