WHITHER THE LNG SHIP?
Eleven of the proprietary containment systems are described and the salient features of each illustrated. These containment systems are of five general types--free-standing prismatic, membrane, free-standing spherical, semi-membrane, integrated tanks. Several of the important elements of design and operation of the LNG ship with respect to safety are discussed, including wheelhouse visibility, recognition, traffic control, liquid sloshing, and boil-off vapour disposition. Other design aspects, such as ship size, speed and power, and reliquefaction, are commented upon briefly. The safety and design aspects presented are but a representative few of the many issues which must be resolved in order to assure that the future of the LNG ship will provide safe and commercially viable carriage of this important commodity.
