LATERITES, FERRICRETES, BAUXITES AND SILCRETES
Mineralogical data is tabulated, the respective solubilities are listed, and the chemistry of solution, mobilization, precipitation and crystallization of iron, aluminum and silica are examined in this study of the formation of laterites, ferricretes, bauxites and silicretes. These superficial materials which occur in areas with marked seasonal climatic characteristics, are formed at or close to the surface of the earth, either in the soil or as rock by physicochemical processes. They are formed by the mobilization by leaching, transport in solution and precipitation under critical conditions of iron, aluminum or silica. The formation of these materials is all part of a single process; the form of the final product depends upon the nature of the parent materials and the ambient physical and climatic conditions under which leaching occur.
