TOWARDS A CORRECT EVALUATION OF STOPPING DISTANCE IN HIGHWAY DESIGN
PER UNA CORRETTA VALUTAZIONE DELLO SPAZIO DI ARRESTO NELLE PROGETTAZIONI STRADALI
The author examines in particular the distribution of the vehicle weight during braking, and the corresponding distribution of the braking force, and arrives at some analytical expressions for longitudinal skidding conditions. A limit condition is then postulated in terms of highway design formulae, and a final analytical expression is derived which generalises the results of the study, permitting the calculation of a safe stopping distance, in terms of the variation in the coefficient of friction due to weather conditions, the state of the pavement, vehicle speed, and tyre pressure. /TRRL/
