LONGSHORE CURRENTS IN TWO LABORATORY STUDIES: RELEVANCE TO THEORY

This study reevaluates the longshore current experiments by Galvin (1963) and by Putnam et al (I1949), with particular reference to their role as tests of theoretical predictions of longshore current velocity. The study attempts to establish that the laboratory data published in 1949 cannot by used to evaluate theories of longshore current velocity. The study emphasizes the sensitivity of velocity prediction to measurement error in breaker angle. The study documents the need to consider the inherently nonuniform velocities produced in the experiments. This paper covers laboratory experiments with uniform periodic waves on fixed plane beaches.
