TENDENCY TOWARDS FUEL ECONOMY AND DECREASING AIR POLLUTION IN AUTOMOBILE TRANSPORT OF THE USSR

Despite the absence of the so-called 'energy crisis' in the U.S.S.R. the state pays much attention to the rational consumption of fuel by road transport. The cost of fuel is a considerable part of the total cost of transportation. In the conditions of the U.S.S.R. the cost of fuel for road transport is around 10-15 percent of all the expenses connected with the use of motor vehicles. To reduce fuel consumption various modes of transport are used, gas is being substituted for liquid fuel, and the diesel engine is in wide use. In cities public transport is mostly being used to reduce fuel consumption. Much space in the press is given to the methods of reducing the emission of pollutants. /DOT/
