PRACTICAL METHODS OF SPEED ZONING

Speed zoning is the complete investigation and treatment of the total roadway environment and is a method by which speed limits are evaluated and established. The elements of the roadway environment which require attention in such a study include prevailing speed; accident history; visibility; safe speed for curves and other potentially hazardous conditions; pavement condition; existing regulatoty, warning and guide signing; effect of school zones; effect of roadside development; parking practices; mode of control of intersecting streets; and speed of traffic signal progression. The speed zoning task is not complete until the necessary traffic control devices are in place and located to provide the reasonable motorist with timely, easily understood information.
