MAINTENANCE PLANNER IMPROVES EFFICIENCY
Engineering and transportation departments used to work independently of each other's schedules which led to maintenance work being planned without regard to train schedules. Now, more and more railroads are bringing these two departments together to plan so as to avoid as many conflicts as possible. One such way that Burlington Northern is handling this situation is by helping to develop an expert system whereby a computer program handles information from the two departments and resolves conflicts quickly. The Service Maintenance Planner is a four-point system--1) a knowledge base containing information needed to identify and resolve conflicts; 2) an automatic conflict resolver; 3) a database accessor which can access train and maintenance scheduling information; and 4) a user interface which provides video graphics and reports concerning conflicts. This program has allowed Burlington Northern to realize cost savings related to train and maintenance delays.
