M-K: "MADE IN U.S.A."
Morrison-Knudsen has been holding its own in winning passenger railcar orders although it is the sole US-owned passenger railcar maker. Although M-K is considered the global leader in remade passenger railcars and locomotives, its expansion into new car output is a continuation of its growth efforts. A spokesman for M-K's car shop in Hornell, NY, said the firm's workers are still enhancing and expanding output capacities. Part of M-K's future may hinge on decisions made by the US government. M-K thinks that the government could help it with some foreign markets including Taiwan, which M-K would encourage due to the trade balance issue. M-K feels it is ready for such events as magnetic levitation technology, although that particular technology is expected to be tackled further in the future. However, M-K would be interested in providing what is necessary if the maglev demand should come about.
