OPTIMUM TRACK SHIP ROUTING OFFERS PROVEN ECONOMIES
Describes in considerable detail the methods used by Ocean Routes Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif. in weather routing ships in order to select a course which minimises the increase in track distance while at the same time avoiding specific weather disturbances existing in the seaway at the same time of passage. The economics of the concept are historically proven, and although the primary benefit is undoubtedly that of a reduction of time underway, secondary benefits include lower bunker consumption, less cargo damage, less hull damage, reduced probability of loss from weather-related causes and an enhanced ability to keep to schedules. The last point being of particular importance to the liner trades.
