ELECTRONIC DISTANCE MEASURING--A VALUABLE TOOL IN DREDGING
The absence of accurate position information on board a dredge can impose a considerable economic handicap upon a dredging operation. This article describes how an electronic distance measuring system can be a source of accurate information for an operating dredge. Some of the functions of the electronic distance measuring equipment are discussed, with particular reference to a specific unit in operation in England. The accuracy of the system is also discussed, and the high degree of accuracy also provides other important advantages which would not otherwise be able to be utilized with other methods of distance measuring.
