PAINT PROTECTION FOR ICE-GOING SHIPS AND ICE-BREAKERS
Ship model tests made in recent years in ice, and full-scale tests have shown that the mechanical friction between ice and the ship's hull is a primary factor of ice resistance. This article describes the process of icebreaking, and how the broken ice travels around the hull of the icebreaking vessel, thereby creating ice resistance. Following this, a description is given of various types of hull coatings, and how each can reduce the resistance to ice, while increasing the resistance to abrasion.
