FOAMING GIVES NEW LIFE TO OLD BARGES

Injection of polyurethane foam to fill the voids of old deck barges is extending their life from five to twenty years, cutting maintenance costs, reducing the possiblity of sinking, and, in some cases, gives greater strength to the barge. Cost of the technique is less than one-half of the expense involved in other types of rehabilitation. How this process is carried out, and actual experience with this process are both discussed, and possible future developments are described.
