POWER REQUIREMENTS OF FORWARD MOVING AIR CUSHION VEHICLES
The losses associated with an air cushion vehicle when moving forward are analyzed. Both low and high aspect ratio configurations are considered as well as various blower pressure rises. It is shown that minimum power consumption occurs for the static air cushion, the air in the cushion stationary with respect to the cushion, when the cushion pressure is equal to the dynamic pressure caused by the forward motion. The power requirements for an air cushion vehicle, and how these requirements may be reduced, are discussed, as are the various power losses, and the manner in which they may be minimized.
