REPETITIVE LOAD TESTS OF CONCRETE SLABS ON CEMENT-TREATED SUBBASES
The fatigue behavior of concrete slabs on cement-treated subbases was investigated. Concrete slabs 3,5,6,7, and 8 in. thick were cast either directly on a clay subgrade or on a cement-treated subbase 3.6. or 9 in. thick. Interlayer treatment between the slab and the cement-treated subbase was either a sand-cement grout or an SS-1 bituminous emulsion. Slab responses to fatigue loading are compared to theory. The treads of the data are in good agreement with fatigue theory although slab performance was better than would be anticipated based on the improvement in the soil modulus or "k value" due to the addition of the cement-treated subbase. The load-carrying capability of cement-treated subbases was 26% greater than predicted by theory and 71% greater than values for similar pavements without subbases. Slab performance with the cement-bonded interlayer treatment was only slightly better than the performance of slabs with the SS-1 emulsion interlayer. As anticipated, a given thickness of cement-treated subbase was more effective as slab thickness decreased.
