MARINE ENGINES AND VIBRATION ACCIDENTS
The authors have summarized the vibration accidents experienced in the class boats registered with the Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Ship Classification Society) in the past 25 years and remedial measures taken at the time of each accident, and the vibration accidents which have been brought to the fore in recent years. The following accidents are all associated with diesel engines and they include the vibration of the engine frame, the axial vibration of the crankshaft, the damage to the tension bolts, and the vibration of the camshaft driving mechanism. Vibration accidents involving steam turbines and their associated equipment are described, and actions which may be taken beforehand to prevent accidents due to vibration are also discussed.
