REDUCTION OF NOISE IN SHIPS
This article discusses the problem of noise on board ships, as well as ways this problem can be alleviated. Three main factors are used in evaluating noise levels, namely risk of hearing damage, speech intelligibility and the comfort criterion. These factors are all discussed, as are the complex noise situations that exist on board ships. Reasons for the existence of these noise situations are explained. The means by which noise in ships may be reduced are summarized, with each part of the ship examined. Developments in noise control are also briefly described.
