THOUGHTS ON ENGINE CONTROL
Efficient control of medium-speed diesel engines is discussed. The discussion goes first into the question of reliability, and the author concludes that even though multi-engine arrangements have a greater number of moving parts than do single-engine setups, the probability of complete engine breakdown, halting the ship completely, is extremely remote, whereas if something happens to a single engine, the ship cannot use any other machinery in order to keep moving, even at a reduced speed. Control system requirements for engine arrangements supplying varying loads are discussed including overspeed protection systems.
