THE TENSION-LEG PLATFORM
This article discusses and describes three designs of offshore drilling platforms utilizing the tension-leg concept of anchoring. Elements of tension-leg platforms include the above-surface platform connected to a subsurface buoyancy chamber which is connected to the anchoring equipment by wire cables. Advantages of this design are many, and some of them are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of the three platform designs are discussed, and these include economic, stability, and rigidity factors. Construction of tension-leg platforms is also discussed, and one of the three designs described stands out as being the easiest and most economical to both construct and operate.
