INERTING SYSTEMS MOVE AHEAD

Product tankers are increasing in number, size and in the variety of refined cargo transported: developments in the efficiency of systems designed to render safe the effects of hydrocarbon gases, by rapid freeing, venting and the use of a blanketting inert gas, have increased correspondingly. This article reviews the developmental progress of these systems, and it also discusses the requirements of an inert gas system, and then goes on to describe how these requirements are generally met. The installation of an inerting system on a new tanker is also discussed, with points which must be watched in order to prevent problems from arising also described.
