ASSESSMENT OF THE STABILITY OF FLOATING PLATFORMS
Decisions made in the early stages of design of an offshore drilling unit concerning the dimensions and configuration of the unit will determine its basic stability features, and a need to comply with a set of rules or regulations concerning stability could impose a specific limit to the height of the center of gravity of the unit. This in turn may limit the amount of top weight on board the unit and determine its dependence on frequent deliveries from supply boats. Section I of this paper describes and compares these rules and regulations. Section II describes a special computer program which has been developed to process the stability calculations of offshore units. Section III concerns a stability criterion which is currently being challenged as being incorrect or inappropriate.
