ASPHALT WITH IMPROVED SKID RESISTANCE
In an effort to produce surfaces with increased skid resistance, 4 test sections each 7 m wide x 45 m long x 25 mm deep - were laid together with 100 tonnes of size 10 "control" asphalt and two (one coarser than the other) basic experimental asphalts. The principal constituent of the aggregate was a vesicular newer basalt having a high resistence to polishing (PSV-50). The control asphalt was designed to have a typical size 10 dense grading and binder content which would render an air void content of approximately 4 percent. The density, skid resistance, surface texture and drainage characteristics of the experimental and control asphalts were monitored (results are tabulated). On the basis of this study, it is concluded that the use of an open aggregate grading and viscous binder produces asphalt having a satisfactory surface texture which will not close up under action of traffic. Such a texture promotes skid resistance of the pavement surface.
