SOUND SIGNALLING TO MEET IMCO'S TOUGHER REGULATIONS

New regulations concerning the acoustic qualities of ships' sound signals and equipment used, which were laid down by the 1972 IMCO Convention, are discussed. The aim of these regulations is to achieve appropriate, well defined and balanced signals. The Convention also recommended suitable positioning of the equipment in order to achieve maximum signal effect, but with minimum disturbance to those on board. Existing sound regulations and customs are reviewed, with the new concepts explained. Practical arrangement of sound signalling equipment, with certain phenomena which must be taken into consideration when originally installing the equipment, are also discussed.
