FUEL WASHING KEEPS GAS TURBINES HAPPY ON HEAVY OIL

Low grade fuels burned in gas turbines must first be cleansed of certain contaminants before using. This article describes the washing plant in the world's first gas turbine powered liquefied natural gas carrier. The main reason why these fuels must be cleansed is to prevent encrustations from forming on the turbine blades, which would cause rapid corrosion and engine failure. The washing plant described contains a demulsifier, a water proportioning unit, and mixing and centrifuging units, and the function of each unit is explained. Operation of the plant is described, as is plant automation.
