POSSIBLE TRENDS IN FREIGHT CARRIER DESIGN
In this article, some of the possible future trends in the design of general cargo carriers (excluding bulk), and some of the economic factors which may dictate these trends, are considered. Some of the factors considered include increasing capital costs, labor costs and fuel costs. Future trends in ship design are discussed, and these include roll-on/roll-off vessels, pallet vessels, and barge carrying vessels. The design of a vessel utilizing a concept called the maxi-container system is also discussed, and this ship design is described in detail.
