REINFORCED EARTH RESEARCH AND ACHIEVEMENTS
DE GEWAPENDE AARDE? ONDERZOEK EN TOEPASSINGEN
The principles guiding reinforced earth construction are outlined association of earth (sand, gravel) and reinforcement together with a historical outline of this new material, the main application of which is, at the present time, embankments and retaining walls. A study of the behaviour of th ematerial was conducted by means of triaxial tests the soil used was Fontainebleau sand and the reinforcement was aluminium foil circular discs. Reinforced earth structures can fail because of cracking or through lack of adhesion of the reinforcement results are given of investigations on small-scale models and on real structures into the distribution of tensile stresses along the reinforcement. Reinforced earth structures can withstand maximum differential settlement of 2;100 if the skin consists of metal elements, and 1;100 if the skin is made of concrete scales. Present design methods for reinforced earth structures are described together with some structures. ;TRRL;
