LESSONS TO BE DRAWN FROM ACCIDENTS WHICH OCCURRED IN FOUR BOX GIRDER METAL BRIDGES
LECONS A TIRER DES ACCIDENTS SURVENUS A QUATRE PONTS METALLIQUES EN CAISSON
Reports on accidents which occurred in four large box girder metal bridges helped to define the different types of error which led to failure. It seems that a large number of these errors can be avoided, and that special effort must be made asregards the calculation of the buckling of the compressed stiffened walls. A non-linear theory of buckling was developed by the authors, who are conducting tests with a view to confirming this theory. For each case the authors give details of (1) The dimensions and construction method of the structure? (2) Process of and circumstances leading to failure? (3) Causes of failure as they can be deduced from the final report by the experts of from observations not yet officially approved. ;TRRL;
