FRESH ANALYSIS AS A CONTROL ON PAVEMENT QUALITY CONCRETE
With the publication of road note 29, edition 3, and the consequent reduction in rigid pavement thickness, many more motorways are being built with concrete carriageways. The use of the traditional concrete quality control tests give A rough-and-ready assessment of the workability and, later, indications of strength, but these are far too late to enable action to be taken. The problems of controlling the quality of the pavement concrete have led increasingly to the feeling that a form of fresh analysis would be a more satisfactory test giving, as it does, a quick and accurate picture of concrete. This paper describes the application of wet analysis on a large concrete carriageway contract. As A result of this and other work, the author is firmly convinced that fresh analysis is as near to the ideal test for high volume daily quality concrete control over an extended period, as it is possible to obtain. The paper was given to the south midland branch of the institution meeting at aylesbury, buckinghamshire, on january 22nd, 1974. (A)
