AN EXTENSION OF AASHO FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN METHOD
This article gives an account of the development of a model which has been designed to avoid earlier uncertainties about the correct values of the AASHO coefficients of relative strength when designing flexible pavements. The author first reviews existing theories and flexible pavement design procedures and lists important road trials in the usa. The AASHO interim design guides for flexible pavements are discussed and their shortcomings are emphasized, particularly with respect to the evaluation and consideration of the coefficients of relative strnegth. Details are given of the AASHO road test model and the development of a revised model which will give the structural number value directly in terms of standard elastic modulus values of the materials to be used in the different pavement layers. The author continues with A justification of the revised model based on a theoretical background followed by further practical verification based on a comparison of calculated strength values with those suggested by nchrp project 1-11 and those found in the AASHO road test results. The relationship between elastic modulus values and soil support values is discussed. It is concluded that the revised model shows promise and it is recommended that it be adopted in the usa and suggests that it may be of use in india. /TRRL/
