RESULTS OF ENERGY TRANSPORTATION LITERATURE REVIEW CONDUCTED FOR APPALACHIAN REGIONAL COMMISSION

This document presents the results of the review of recent studies and publications on energy transportation issues and their particular implications for Appalachia. The purpose of the review has been two-fold: (1) Assist in the identification of key problem areas and opportunities in energy transport for the region, and (2) Identify areas where further study is warranted for use in structuring the Appalachian Regional Commission's energy transportation study program. The results are organized into the following sections: Description of the coverage of the 20 priority issues provided by the most important studies (over 50 in number) among the reports and articles that were reviewed; Individual summaries of the 50 key studies including purpose, data sources and quantity, major results, and relevance to the priority energy transportation issues; and A bibliography of all the reports and articles covered by the review (approximately 170 in number). Modes covered include rail, water, highway (truck), and pipelines. Energy commodities include coal, petroleum and natural gas, wood, electricity, nuclear fuels, and crude oil.
