SERVICES FOR THE ROAD USER

The paper describes various services available to the user and traces their development from the early days of road transport. The problems of siting petrol filling stations are examined and comments are made on the provision of repair and catering facilities. Reference is made to the various facilities available on motorways including the emergency telephone system. The problems associated with the development and operation of motorway service areas are described and comment is made on the criticisms levelled in recent years at the standard of service provided. Suggestions are made as to how they might be improved. The need for lorry parks is examined and reference is made to the role of highway authorities in the provision of picnic areas and toilets.
