SPLITS OVER CYLINDER SPLITTING
The author gives an account of a statistical appraisal of the DOE specification for road and bridge works with respect to the concrete cylinder splitting test, which has replaced the cube crushing test for concrete road testing. The DOE compliance scheme is compared with that recommended by cp110, and gives notes which are based on work using computer simulation which was carried out to examine the specification in detail and assess the likely practical implications. It is pointed out that the doe specification assumes a standard deviation of 0.4n/mm2 which is higher than figures quoted elsewhere (averaging 0.3n/mm2) and factors that may have contributed to this difference are listed. Details are given of the author's analysis of the compliance clause using a computer. This was carried out for two standard deviations (0.3 and 0.4n/mm2) each involving 10,000 computer-simulated results. The article includes figures showing the probability of acceptance per test result and probability of compliance for different failure rates using 30, 50 and 100 results criteria. The latter shows that the probability of surviving 50 test results without having to defend a failed mean-of-4 situation was very poor. The author concludes by briefly discussing the precision of the test which, he claims, means that 4 times as many specimens are required to achieve the same precision as for the cube test, whilst the specification requires only single cylinders from each batch. /TRRL/
