THE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF URBAN ROAD TRAFFIC. 1 - PREDICTIVE MODELS
The evaluation of transport proposals increasingly calls out for techniques which can predict and assess the environmental impacts of traffic. This need is particularly acute on secondary and local networks where the incidence of traffic impact is most widespread, and in this context models have been developed by the present authors to predict key environmental effects: namely, noise, delay and air pollution. The paper describes the rationale, development programme and mathematical nature of the models and demonstrates their usefulness in aiding traffic engineers and planners to reach decisions.
