THE PROBLEM OF ROUTE SELECTION IN A LARGE RURAL AREA

The M1-A1 feasibility study is one of a series of such studies commissioned by the Department of the Environment to examine the need for the location of new or improved national strategic routes in the United Kingdom. The envelope of the M1-A1 study included Leicester, Peterborough, Cambridge, Bedford and the planned new town of Milton Keynes, and covered a predominantly rural area of about 40 miles (63.2 km) square. This paper describes how the route selection process prior to evaluation has been approached, and how important variable parameters which were 'external' to the envelope of the study were incorporated. Possible applications of the procedures adopted are also discussed, in particular numerous alternatives appear to satisfy the goal being strived for. (A) /TRRL/
