EMPLOYEE AWARD PROGRAMS: HOW WELL DO THEY WORK?
In an effort to determine the effects of various road department employee awards programs, a survey was made of 45 state programs by the TRB-AASHTO joint committee on maintenance and operations personnel. This article is a digest of the report written on the results of that survey. The following items were noted in the evaluation: (1) Employees appreciate awards but only 25 percent of the programs create enthusiastic response; (2) only 13 percent increased product while 35 percent were considered morale boosters; (3) safety awards tend to encourage improvement; and (4) little use is made of awards for employee improvement. A comparative analysis is made of the major types of awards and how they are currently being implemented. Basic points to recognize in any awards programs are also discussed.
