TRANSPORTATION TOMORROW: RESEARCH TO THE RESCUE
In his address to the Fourth Transportation Policy Workshop, Secretary Coleman calls for a continuance of research and development programs which are considerate of, rather than isolated from, the social environments in which they will function. He discusses briefly the R & D program of the department, on which emphasis is functional, not modal. Some of the areas considered are: safety improvement; cost reduction; improvement of transportation capacity and service; energy and environmental conservation; and future options, such as high-risk projects, and the University Research Program.
