The document is the proceedings of an international symposium hosted by the FBI Laboratory at the Forensic Science Research and Training Center in Quantico, Virginia from March 24-26, 1986. The symposium program included over 40 lectures, poster presentations and panel discussions by prominent scientists representing industry, university and government laboratories in the United States and foreign countries. Topics covered include the pharmacology of ethanol and cannabinoids in relation to vehicle operation, breath, blood and urine alcohol testing, trends in roadside screening, laboratory testing techniques and criteria for identification, correlation of alcohol/drug concentrations and driving impairment, and the role of the expert witness. The symposium provided an exchange of ides which should generate future research into the problem of individuals driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
